Wireless data in the US
Wireless carriers seem to be trying to copy the parts of the Japanese
i-Mode model that they like. They want to be semi-walled portals to
``content.''
They want to squeeze the teat of milkable partnerships, like
``AOL
instant messages.'' They want control of the handset, and think
they're going to ``provision'' things right onto your phone so they
can make the phone you bought more willing or less willing to obey you
based on what you pay them.
In addition to playing business monopoly games and trying to drive
users to partner web sites, they're displaying a level of cluelessness
to basic usability concerns that is unfortunately typical of telephone
companies, which will become obvious when I discuss their early
attempts at wireless email.
